Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

I've been thinking about this. It's a common refrain and it always bothers me. And I know there's something here, because it's coning out of Seth MacFarlane's mouth, and Seth MacFarlane is trash.https://twitter.com/SethMacFarlane/status/990595450632732672 …

One of the biggest flaws of the “left” is its frequent tendency to be more outraged by speech than action. On any given day, you’ll see more far online anger over an offensive joke than you will over mass incarceration or corporate pollution. We can do better than this. https://twitter.com/renato_mariotti/status/990592373502763011 …

On the one hand, I think the critique is fair. You will hear people speak up about speech more than actions. At least the big systemic ones that MacFarlane cites. On the other hand, that's to be expected, and it doesn't mean the criticism of words is invalid.

There is a large contingent of Americans who believe that most speech is "harmless". They work hard to ensure that people's words do not get examined closely. They fight to maintain a sentiment that speech and actions are separate things, when they have always been intertwined.

As long as we think we can avoid examining speech, we will never understand heinous actions. And we will surely not be able to avoid the harm of these actions before it happens. The question is do people like MacFarlane even want to do that?

I've been saying for a while that America's culture is centered on criminalizing it's citizens and taking punitive action against those deemed "criminal". https://twitter.com/search?q=from%3Apolotek%20punitive%20society&src=typd …

But the more I think about this, it becomes clear what follows from that. We don't try to stop anything. We are only invested in reacting after the fact. People can do whatever they want. The only conversation we have is what punishment do they deserve.

This is a fundamental ideological flaw and it's actively taught to children as part of America's doctrine of "negative rights".

In this system of thinking, you have a right to shoot your girlfriend as long as you're willing to risk trial or becoming a fugitive for doing so.

In this system of thinking, the state has no right to stop you, only to try to punish you after the fact.
