people hate on systemd and they have good points people also hate on network-manager and modem-manager and that is just good old-fashioned "i suffered to set up my wpa2 wireless connection and so you should suffer too" you'll take network-manager from my cold dead hands

Well modem-manager is pretty awful if you work with FPGA programmers or any device that communicates over USB serial protocol.

seems like this is probably a solvable problem though, for the 6 people that use it.

The biggest problem is the horrible ux for newcomers who wonder why the device doesn't work or gets corrupt data... bc modemmanager was spamming Hayes commands to an unknown device.

it doesn't do this to FTDI devices anymore so FPGAs are fine. only the arguably noncompliant USB-Serial converters using CDC-ACM are affected

I have several boards that use ACM. I think the Numato is one.
