Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

It seems all of the valuable non-invasive results could have been achieved with full blinding.

      Sorry, I don’t understand. “Non-invasive results”?

Things like finding genetic risk for disease vs finding biological relatives who don't want to be found or linking you with criminal suspects.

Sorry, I still don’t understand. What does “invasive” mean? If there’s full “blinding,” wouldn’t that mean I don’t get the results? I don’t understand.

No, it means they get no data on your identity.

Maybe a poor choice of words on my part.

Anonymizing would fit better. What 23andMe knows about me is my abbreviated name, sex, age, and country. Genealogical information comes from linking information from other customers. That particular part could be opt-in, so that’s a decision on their part.

Since DNA is PII, anonymizing would require *not storing* it, i.e. doing analysis in secure environment then destroying it.

I used to work for a bank which handled PII as a matter of course. Account numbers, SSNs, etc., these are PII, but you can’t simply shred them. You store them securely, and there are regulatory mechanisms, audited by third parties, which ensure they are done so properly.

The link between an individual and their PII was the careful junction. Here it must be the same.

I thinl this is seriously different. In financial you're responsible for record keeping of txns etc. Legitimate reason to need ongoing access. No such reason here.

Are you referring to the sample itself or the data collected from it?
