Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

It's too bad phones never got a standard like ACPI, the fact that every OS build has to be custom-coded for every specific chip of every specific model on mobile phones and that they're hard-coded for specific kernel versions is unbelievable.
Even if they had a standard like ACPI, every single component on these phones requires a bespoke driver. Even with Android phones, you have the DTS (device trees), but you can't run mainline because vendors mutilate the kernel source code.
Yes, DT is at least as good (arguably better) a solution as ACPI. The problem is awful non-upstreamable/non-upstream-compatible drivers and Android's build system that wants to treat whole device as target rather than userspace & kernel separately.

Looks like they're finally fixing it!https://twitter.com/jhamby/status/988831536043585536 …
Rich Felker added,
At least we would be able to run mainline on certain devices if Android shipped their IPC, etc. mechanisms out-of-tree. With Project Treble, Google are pushing vendors to use kernel modules and they are loaded earlier during startup. No reason the Android changes can't be LKMs.
LKMs are tied to a specific kernel version anyway because there's no stable kernel-internal API. This hell won't end until drivers are completely out of kernel.
That's the ABI, not the API, right? The issue is that it's practically impossible to rebase an Android kernel tree on mainline.
