Anyone tried using pi zero w's as super-cheap non-crap (compared to consumer 'router' products) wifi bridges?

To clarify, purely brctl+hostapd, no ip address, no other software running at all, essentially no attack surface or room for [mis]configuration once setup.

I miss the trick where you could exit PID 1, panic the kernel, and it would still route packets with no userspace at all.

Well hostapd needs to keep running in order to work. Associating clients to AP isn't passive.
