Of course you'd also need ethernet dongles and power supplies, possibly integrated into one if you can get it (PoE with USB power output?)

To clarify, purely brctl+hostapd, no ip address, no other software running at all, essentially no attack surface or room for [mis]configuration once setup.

I've always found them basically impossible to buy thanks to the business model of using them as loss leaders
-
Every time I checked sites have them as "kits" ($24+) but not bare board. Not so bad if the kit has a couple things you need anyway like OTG cable and power supply.
-
I've always found the kits to be stupidly overpriced to compensate, especially given that I already have all of the items normally in these kits.
-
Well yeah they're overpriced if you don't need them, but I'd price the miniHDMI adapter and OTG adapter at about $4 each, covering just over half the price difference, so it's not too bad.
-
The "pi for $10" narrative is deceptive, though.
-
Maybe a full pi (one of the models with wifi; the new 3 B+ seems to even have dual-band) ends up being a better option.

The onboard WiFi antennae on the RPis are rather bad, to my experience. A USB WiFi dongle performed better.
-
Can you recommend a good one that works as an AP? BTW you can fairly easily mod the rpi (zero or 3B) to add an external antenna.
-
I used the onboard WiFi as AP, since I only needed to bridge the gap over a few meters. The USB dongle on a long cable played WiFi client. I'm still wondering if you can also mod the new 3+, because it's 5GHz capable.
-
I don't see an obvious analogue of the regular 3B mod on the pics here:https://www.sparkfun.com/products/14643

Requires cutting a trace, if I'm not mistaken.
