This is a good DRM compromise from @manningbooks: random paragraphs appear to be scrambled if you didn't purchase a book, but you can tap to unscramble. Reasonable.
Also, this is a Fortran book.pic.twitter.com/B1r06m0x8M
Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

This sounds completely orthogonal to DRM...?
Perhaps not explained well enough? Goto Manning and use livebooks feature to browse a book. If you've purchased it and logged in you can see all text, bookmark etc. If you haven't, you see first paragraph or so unscramble and remainder scrambled. There way of try before buy drm
Right, it doesn't look like a "compromise on drm" at all. Rather just drm with both nagware trial and paid full versions. But both could also be done drm-free.
"Compromise on drm" doesn't mean compromise on whether you have to pay. It means on whether you have full use of what you paid for, not locked into certain software or devices that limit how you use it.
It's worth noting that if you buy the book in any format via http://Manning.com we provide you with every major eBook format, DRM free: liveBook's primarily designed to let you quickly and easily get to your book in HTML, as well as browse our whole library :)
Excellent. That wasn't clear from the original post calling it a "compromise on drm" though. Rather it looks like a nice drm-free business model.
