This is a good DRM compromise from @manningbooks: random paragraphs appear to be scrambled if you didn't purchase a book, but you can tap to unscramble. Reasonable.

Excellent. That wasn't clear from the original post calling it a "compromise on drm" though. Rather it looks like a nice drm-free business model.
