Serious question for gamer parents from a non-parent: How do you teach your kids to appreciate the classics? Do you hand them a copy of FF6 when they’re 12? Do you teach them to throw fireballs? How do you teach them to appreciate what came before them?
Play in front of them and don't let them take the controller. I'm not kidding. It works if you start young at least.

I don't know the full story on how/why but my nephews are really interested in retro consoles, probably moreso than any current games.
