Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

I love this example of undefined behavior around using an uninitialized variable where gcc and clang take different branches: https://godbolt.org/g/JVJg5v  Example from slides from this talk: https://twitter.com/macson_g/status/984760684897624064 … #cplusplus #Programmingpic.twitter.com/iAxpr4nixO

It would be really nice if they consistently translated obvious unconditional UB into a single trap instruction. Basically lite UBSan in cases that have no cost.

most of the time I'd prefer a compile-time error

Note, that currently both gcc and clang only produce warnings for undefined behavior that they produce diagnostics for: https://twitter.com/shafikyaghmour/status/975191249471746048 … At least what I could find. This seems to be the rationale: https://twitter.com/shafikyaghmour/status/975235103428194304 … So you need to opt-in to errors -Werror FTW!

So why don't compilers make diagnostics for undefined behavior errors? Came up a few times recently: https://twitter.com/sumohurd/status/975063513981857792 … and: https://twitter.com/DaytimeCoder/status/974460720409542656 … It looks like due to dead code triggering the diagnostics: http://blog.llvm.org/2011/05/what-every-c-programmer-should-know_21.html … #cplusplus #Programming pic.twitter.com/3oySt8GnNw

Compiling without -Wall -Wextra (or -Weverything) is like driving at night without your headlights on. The first indication you’ll have of a problem is the nasal demons.

If the UB is obvious enough to be detected statically, then a compile-time warning is best, as @johnregehr said. In general, UB is part of the "spirit of C" :)pic.twitter.com/Xel4vIQHQT
