Umm, Pandora? Their "recommendation engine" is literally "grep for whatever Clearchannel-owned radio station plays this song and duplicate their playlist".

Your mileage may vary but the Music Genome Project was a sophisticated effort to build a “ground truth” based on inputs from musicologists and paying people with Amazon credits to evaluate music.

Then they got roped into the same illegal payola agreements as radio stations, promoting certain songs & artists and licensing only 1-2 songs per album and turned into just another awful radio station.

Then they jacked up their prices 10x and just rode on customers who were comfortable with awful radio station behavior and never noticed the difference.
