Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Nexus 6P phones turned out to be fairly reliable other than the battery degradation, which isn't uncommon. Unfortunately, the market for batteries is full of dangerous counterfeits without the proper safety measures like overheating detection... Nexus 5X on the other hand...

There's a drastic shift in quality from the last generation of Nexus devices to the Pixels. It's very apparent that corners were cut on the battery for the Nexus 6P. Nexus 5X is just a disaster. 5X failure rate must be something like 35% at this point and quickly rising...

Nexus 5X has an extremely thin PCB which is not sturdy and overheating or just twisting the phone slightly seems to break the BGA balls under the SoC and lead to bootloop. Google seems to be very well aware of it because cpufreq is tuned to avoid A57 cores at all costs

Ohhh thank you, partner had two 5Xes die and it's good to hear a concrete reason why!

Hope it's correct. It was known that disabling A57 fixed bootloop for some devices. Likely related to the bad contacts/balls. Higher current leading to higher temperature causes some displacement of the faulty BGA balls. My 5X died and I was surprised by how thin the PCB is.

Disabling them *before* it boot loops would be a good approach if the heat from them is the source of the problem. It's at the point where it doesn't seem like there's much to lose because so many of the devices are failing. Browsing the web, updating or rebooting is risky...

Uhg this is probably why my Oppo Find5 started bootlooping all the time after overheating.
