If they've succeeded in stopping most people from doing it, they've won. It's important to have uBlock Origin work out-of-the-box or people won't use it in large numbers. Sites could ramp up the difficulty much more than they're currently doing if advertisers weren't clueless.

It probably does work out of the box by now, but if the site is readable with js off and known to have been malicious in the past, no reason for me to try turning it back on...

I haven't configured uBlock Origin at all (except for cosmetic blocking on Twitter) and the out-of-box experience is great.
