One important thing to remember: even if text isn't structured to begin with, you can usually structure it suitably for another tool with a one-line script.

I have shell scripts to do comparisons of emitted assembly when I refactor. I pipe it from "gdb -x" to cut to sed to diff if memory serves. The middle two commands are to make the diff output look nice. I wouldn't call it pleasant to read w/o comments, but it _does_ do the job!
