There's a serious misuse of the word algorithms involved here (hey at least it's not as bad as "crypto"), but unfortunately the critics are using it to derail otherwise completely valid arguments/concerns.

I'm not even so sure it's "misuse" but rather just different context. The topic/context is not things like "algorithms for sorting a list" but rather things like "algorithms for identifying a person".
