Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

Dear Linux Weenies: Quit "deprecating" standard tools. It's stupid. You're breaking compatibility with LITERALLY EVERY OTHER UNIX ON EARTH and you need to stop.https://twitter.com/nixcraft/status/976156288638840832 …

I mean at the same time I can kind of see some of the logic. Some of these tools (notoriously ifconfig) have options that interact in weird ways or produce output that's hard to parse, but you can't *change* any of it because you know someone's gonna depend on it anyway.

So add a new tool if you absolutely must, but don’t break LITERALLY 50 YEARS of accumulated practice, knowledge, and tools. If I have a broken machine I need to be able to use my muscle memory to quickly troubleshoot, not spend 10 minutes googling what new command I have to use.

isn't that what's usually happening? I heard that e.g. ifconfig, iwconfig, more, dd are deprecated, netstat was new to me, but still every linux system has them.

From a quick google, it apparently isn't installed by default in Debian 9. On Ubuntu, it's a dependency of ubuntu-server and an indirect "Recommends" of ubuntu-dev-tools.

Sorry, my tweet was imprecise. I agree totally that the declarations of "deprecated!" all over the place are harmful to users. But it's only harmful if you're using a distro that buys into that bs.

Problem is GroupThink is strong in the Linux community. A couple of distros "buy into that bs" then another distro does it because they did it, and pretty soon systemd is everywhere with its pisspoor design attitude and shoddy implementation.

That was in reference to group think (and systemd). It's origins come from RedHat.

Ah, yes RedHat is not a Sanity Leader in that regard. (I still don't understand why they jumped on that particular train - I get why you'd want a better init system, but systemd still doesn't seem "better" to me, even with wider adoption and a bunch of fixes since its birth.)

"Meh. Just rewrite them all in python." - The Linux Community, probably. (Also I'll say that's not necessarily a bad idea: If the issue is "We're replacing them because the code is old and hard to maintain" just re-create the tool in a language you like.)

Meet my new Linux distribution: Suicide Linux. All core system tools have been reimplemented in Brainfuck and the only shell installed out of the box is csh (not even tcsh - plain nasty old C Shell). "Just kill yourself. No matter how you do it, it's gonna be less painful."
