As I recall, the period when the New York Times op-ed section was quarantined behind the TimesSelect paywall (2005-2007) brought us - Democratic congressional majority - Invention of iPhone, Twitter - Rise of Barack Obama onto the path that got him the Presidential nomination

For this brief moment, there was hope, there was a sense of progress in the world. We had problems but it was starting to look like we could overcome them. Lehman had not yet crashed. Obama had not voted for NSA telecom amnesty. There was no NYT op-ed page

This suggests a monetization model for Twitter: put all the nazis behind a paywall & let them pay to hear each other blabbering.
