This is awful. I don’t think China would have kicked out Apple. Right now the default is iCloud is on. It’s on Apple to change that default to off in China, and only turn it on after a very very clear warning is presented to the user, with periodic reminders. When history books are written, this moment will be remembered as a sad, horrible and major turning point. This is the worst possible outcome, and a big one. A lot of downstream effects will come from this, including in more democratic countries, and none of them are good.

Not at all the same. Not one bit. Also Google didn’t cave then. This is more egregious—what’s at stake is much more than censorship. Much more.https://twitter.com/joelandren/status/967454770830049281 …

Clay says Apple had no leverage. Probably. I’d say they still could’ve said no—come what may. Maybe the idea that the entire industrial base for tech and other industries could just be outsourced with no consequences for our rights wasn’t all justified.https://twitter.com/cshirky/status/967594193731203072?s=21 …

Clay ShirkyVerified account @cshirkyReplying to @zeynep @bokaneZeynep. China would have kicked out Apple. They just took over Anbang, which is a much bigger deal than ejecting foreign firm. What Apple did is awful, but there is zero leverage -- zero -- in siding with users over the CCP. Apple:China::(Blackberry:India)x100012 replies 37 retweets 75 likesShow this thread -
Bogus. The luxury image is huge leverage.

But cost of switching in China is cheap, as the mobile experience is WeChat, not the OS, so a lockout for native Android only options would be viable. And the luxury elite would still get their grey market imports at 1.5-2x prices. Even better signaling

I viewed "kicking out" as cutting off access to network infrastructure, which would be a major pain for elites too.

An iPhone that can't access app store, can't update, etc. is pretty unappealing.

Sure, but they probably wouldn’t go that far. Just cut off commercial sales. Would slash iPhone sales by millions of units, and be effectively the same thing to Apple. But maybe they’d go full great firewall, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
