if I had to name a single thing OS kernels could change to improve interfaces, it would be to make syscalls as cheap as function calls across shared object boundaries
Big ABI changes are needed to go anywhere with this, but a lot of the cost is fundamental to the cpu priv domain crossing mechanisms.

The best chance is probably dedicating whole cores to syscalls, spinning reading a trigger address.
