Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

If you complain that Github didn't warn you about TLS 1.0/1.1 deprecation, here's your warning for the future: Whenever you rely on old protocol versions with security issues that have been obsolete for a decade be prepared that someone might disable them.

Regardless of warning, one cannot ignore the challenge of maintaining backward compatibility for more than a couple years. Simply disabling and ignoring those who can't afford modern hardware/software is irresponsible.

There are alternatives. Users on old insecure devices can be directed to less secure environments, where content can be retrieved without impacting the security of others. This is how we continue to serve Firefox to users on Windows XP SP2.

We have this exact issue with a significant number of our audience, especially in North and central Africa. Many people around that area use feature phones and we can't just tell them to upgrade because that's just not feasible for many of them

The solution, although complex, is to inspect the client hello for specific indicators (extensions support, TLS version, fingerprint of supported ciphersuites) and route the connection to a termination configured with older parameters. HAProxy can do this, some vendors too.

How does this not just reenable downgrade attacks?

Because modern browsers no longer support sha1 (for our use case). Trickier problem for TLS1.0.
