Ephemeral messaging is important because people are lazy and don’t clean up their logs. If their device / account is compromised, then all of that history is exposed. No one needs to keep chat logs around for months. Allow ppl to automatically delete old messages.

Security people and cryptographers got their threat models in a twist and decided ephemeral messaging was for Bob to ensure that Alice doesn’t have a log of their chat. Since that is impossible to enforce, they decided it was a frivolous feature. It is not.

This is a potentially a good argument for ephemerality being opt-out separately on both ends, but probably doesn't change the optimal default. Ideally we would consciously use different channels for known-need-to-keep.
