Aside from invite-only or pw-protected channels, IRC channels are usually open to the public, not just one company's employees, making nasty behavior in company-oriented channel costly (bc outsiders may be watching). 4/N

If an IRC channel is private, invitations have to go out-of-band. It's not just "random racist/misogynist employee goes to check if his workplace has a forum for like-minded people". 5/N
