Not this exact one, but it's not surprising. There's really no good way to prevent this sort of thing in conventional desktop OSes (short of e.g. getting hardware FIDO U2F deployed everywhere, which would be a great solution for many reasons).

There really is, even on Windows. Make a separate user account for gaming, "switch users" as needed.

Unfortunately, that usually doesn't solve the problem. These things install at system privilege and tend to inject into every user account.

That's not a Windows thing. That's just how system/root works.

Sure it is - it's an OS that allows sw to install things as root/system and an ecosystem of developers who feel entitled to do it. Can't happen on Android or iOS for example.
