How many concepts taught in CS, like recursion, are basically just magicians' sleight-of-hand tricks -- ways to hide costly state or operations somewhere the student doesn't realize they're present?

Officemate in grad school was trying to work out a problem someone had given him "is there a majority element? - in linear time and constant space". I was like "umm, pumping lemma".
