I find this new trend of having webpages where pictures only load if you scroll to them extremely irritating. And I have lots of doubts this makes any sense from a performance perspective.

I just checked this for a large German webpage that just started doing this. They deliver images in a resolution higher than they display and they're unoptimized. If this is about bandwith they don't know what they're doing.

Higher res than display is also possibly about mobile ux (pinch to zoom).
