Guess how many EU citizens are going to opt-in to Facebook and Google‘s advertising surveillance?https://www.fastcompany.com/40531694/facebook-will-need-to-re-obtain-consent-from-all-european-users …
Correction: they don't let you opt-out now. They just let you opt out of being shown the results.

Also if you made opt-in real opt-in (a setting you have to go find yourself rather than a modal prompt shoved in your face) all those numbers would be 0%.

Excellent points!
Hence the regulatory muscle.
It incentivizes:
targeting data collection not people
data protection liability reset
renegotiated exchange for personal data
consumer protections and portability
that could lead to:
potential trust-busting effects -
I think we actually showed that the number of people who can be expected to give meaningful consent is 0% - including whatever poor dev is assigned to quality test the consent system. The only solution is to move away from personal data.https://pagefair.com/blog/2018/granular-gdpr-consent/ …

Because 1. there are so many controllers using personal data for different purposes, which means many many separate opt-ins, and 2. there is no protection of the data in any case, so it’s a breach.https://pagefair.com/blog/2017/understanding-data-leakage/ …
