Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

I notice this all the time on freeways… rear LED running lights that flicker rather than stay on steadily can make a kind of jarring staccato when scanning the roadway. I always wonder who thought that might be a good idea when their whole purpose is visibility during scan.

I'd noticed it too; it's really bad and I legitimately think that flickering lights of that sort are unacceptable on vehicles and manufacturers should be made to put capacitors on those LEDs

Whhaaaaat?! Are they literally pinching a few pennies leaving out caps in a $20k+ vehicle?

I'm too occupied by their simulating police lights in my mirror (chromatic aberration + discrete spectrum + extreme blue freq = UHG) to notice if those awful things are flashing too...

Flickering attracts attention so there is no advantage to smoothing anything but headlights.

Err, it is. Flicker attracts attention, it doesn’t black out objects at that speed. For most lighting and displays you don’t want to trigger motion sensation, but indicators are fine with that outcome.

It’s annoying and attracts attention, which is the desired outcome for indicators.

What the actual fuck is wrong with you? The 'indicators' you propose are not so much attention-getting as so overstimulating and fatigue-inducing as to be hazardous. I am growing bored with explaining this point and will soon block you.

If you have fatigue, don’t drive. You find taillights too annoying? Good. Are they damaging or blocking other vision? Bad. Annoying or fatiguing isn’t an issue. They’re not supposed to be comforting. They’re supposed to attract attention.
