Convinced GNUPlot was created via genetic algorithm optimizing for "maximal frustration while simultaneously technically also plotting data"
It's stupid technical restrictions on distribution of modified versions (must be original source+patch not modified source, and binaries are unclear).

Huh, I actually had no idea. Apologies! ...I get the feeling that clause exists entirely b/c of TeX, come to think of it, which iirc has a similarly goofy license.
