I was going to complain about the thing where you build a thing, and "make" succeeds, and then you look at the directory and you're like… what, so did it build, where is it, you have no ideapic.twitter.com/o9eOsxVQTg

Then I remembered an earlier step told me to use configure, which means this is using autoconf, which means that I COULD just create a temp dir, then configure --prefix the temp dir, then make install, no problem Except thing is, it took me like fifteen years to figure that out

As in, I had been building things on Linux for around fifteen years before I realized you're supposed to --prefix to a temp directory before you make install

You're really not. If the deps are handled right thus will rebuild stuff with the new prefix burned in. You want DESTDIR. It's prepended to all install dests.
