When faced with the decision: 1) Underpay someone now (because you’re currently lacking cash to pay them well) to help you get profits faster 2) Don’t hire anyone yet and take the slow growth until you get enough money to pay that person well I choose Option 2.

Equity is largely worthless to ppl who actually need jobs/work.

I'm not saying you should work for free. I am saying lower pay plus equity can be attractive to some people, especially if they care about the project. I am not saying people should work for lottery tickets for a business they don't especially care about.
