Hypothesis: using email address as account name & supporting pw auth is a bad idea, because naive users see email: and pw: boxes and automatically use their email account password.

I had users setting up Surface Pros on their own, they: 1) Created a Microsoft account using their existing email address 2) Somehow imported all their email from our servers into Microsoft's servers I still have no idea how #2 actually happened, but it did.

Most likely Microsoft tried their passwords on your email server and proceeded to download everything. Providers should be guarding against this.
