If find yourself using the term "virtue signaling" outside the field of evolutionary biology, you are almost certainly being an asshole.
Is there actually an evolutionary biology context where it's ok? Sounds like a bunch of pseudoscience nonsense to justify racial & gender essentialism.

What you're describing is not evolutionary biology. Virtue signals in evolutionary biology include things like the peacock's plumage, which accurately conveys health and signals reproductive viability.

It seems likely that the use of the phrase by awful ppl is related to their fascination with crackpot theories about applying evolutionary biology concepts to human behavior.

Yeah, at some point in recent history the term "virtue signalling" started getting abused as a sciency-sounding synonym for "pandering." However, that usage is genuinely contradictory with the scientific term, and is also just an obnoxious and dishonest way to communicate.
