It looks like they're willing to accept _a_ portability fix, but only one that's gratuitously hideous and complex and requires configure-time checks.

Well, it's not like systemd ever was going to be portable, I just still despise the mentality on principle :P.

That is correct in principle. Systemd is and always will be a desktop os thing. I find it worrying that yocto wants it at all since that implies adding a ton of hacks anyway to make it usable on embedded
