Seems like a misrepresentation in the age of FPGAs. Not to say the FPGA is a simulation of what will go in the ASIC (different PAR, analog properties, etc.) but it's far from nothing-at-all.

I'll take your word for it. I now almost nothing about FPGA's unfortunately.

FPGA's are nifty, but still thus far more doing stuff with simulation (and emulation); eg: emulation to test the basic high-level design, simulation to test a Verilog implementation thereof, and maybe it eventually reaches the FPGA, ... it is like a tower of effort.
