We iterate on cost- making everything "good enough" (barely). This includes English. We rarely come across badly written Chinese so can't compare. Interesting. It never occurred to me. I suppose I also would have a completely different take on Chinese fonts - to me they are sadly meaningless, so I relate to them only as artistic shapes, I would pick the wrong ones to reliably convey meaning.
