Ooh, possibly. Looks like QEMU is setting MADV_HUGEPAGE on it. But wouldn't that manifest as lots of time spent in the page fault handler?
Nope; setting /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled to never and commenting out the madvise didn't change anything.
Weird, no further ideas atm.
