meanwhile: brother just got me an SSD, spent ~5 hours imaging over old main OS HDD to new SSD; got Win10 booted. result: stuff starts very fast and is much more responsive. eg: VS2015 starts in ~5s vs ~10m or so. HDD led also mostly stays off now. notable improvement...

I am not sure; maybe the people at MS had mostly stopped using a normal HDD years ago or something... hibernate was ~10m, and cold-boot was ~40m. now things seem much faster (even much of the normal Windows UI).

Yes, MS devs today never test on normal HDDs, apparently. An not just MS. Evernote has ridiculous lags, and it is just a note-taking app, FFS!

yeah. kind of funny is also making the OS drive faster makes lots of other stuff faster which is being run on or from other drives; and stuff not obviously IO bound (eg: UI responsiveness, ...). like the IO speed of "C:\" is a bottleneck for the whole system or something...

Yeah, apparently just showing “run” menu is now requiring a crapload of disk accesses, and nothing is cached, apparently.

yep, faster: Start Menu, folder reverse-click context-menus, ..., starting a program for debug in VS, launching command-line programs, ... likewise, Windows Explorer apparently now has thumbnails nearly immediately (regardless of drive), folder navigation is faster, ...

One wouldn’t think caching a handful of icons in 2017 would require sometimes thrashing HDD for a few seconds :)

It's searching the registry for all extensions that inject code into the menu & loading & executing them all. Windows is awful.

They probably all run SSD systems in development and don't notice if it runs so poorly from HDD. Sadly there is really no alternative to VC++.
