I gave away crunch, which was a mistake overall. Companies now take it for granted. Think twice before open sourcing your work.

Would your opinion be any different if you didn’t start a new company with a product serving same purpose? In general seems like middleware-library companies are not as common as they used to be.

it seems like for the most part, people will either use things for free, or wont use them at all. most software/tools/middleware that once cost money has since either become free or has been largely displaced by freeware or FOSS alternatives, ...

Games are kinda a special case because they're treated as "write and throw away". Other domains need guarantee that middleware will be around for decades. Only FOSS is safe.

A company could purchase the source code. Source code escrow services are another solution.

Also you need to handle not just threat of them disappearing/going out of business, but also upgrades that no longer meet your needs.
