This matches my intended solution.
Easy solution: don't exchange data as utf-32 and use a sane encoding instead
UTF-16 is the one true text-encoding... well, along with Win1252 and CP-437 and friends; and some logic to guess the text-encoding by examining the bytes, never fails. ( ok, not entirely serious here, for real use UTF-8 is a good general case... )
