The manual APN setup that's supposed to be there in Settings just doesn't exist so I went through the carrier's instructions to get settings delivered by SMS+web.

Once you get the settings package, you're presented with a screen showing CA certs & no explanation what they mean.

It *looks* like you're being asked to installed MITM CA certs provided by the carrier, but turned out just to be sig chain vouching for the settings.
