Let's not forget ed(1) also works with hardcopy terminals like the DECwriter, TI Silent 700, TeleType ASR 33, ... [Although ex also works]
Sadly Unicode broke this property due to the order of base & combining chars. In general you need ability to whiteout & replace...
...a glyph when a new combining char is received & there's no way to determine if all have been received yet.
