Why do people keep suggesting rationals as an alternative to floats? They are worse in every single dimension except representing 1/3.

They're very useful for some things, but the overlap with what floats are useful for is basically the empty set.

I honestly can't think of any situation in which I would choose rationals as an computer approximation to real numbers.

That's why I said the overlap is basically empty. Can't see any way arbitrary rationals are better than diadic ones for approximating reals.

For applications other than approximating reals, tho, rationals may be useful.
