ISO C's notion of "text file" is utterly idiotic and counter to any real-world practices in the past 3-4 decades.
On the one hand, binary read/write have to be data preserving round-trip (full 9 bits)...

...and on the other hand, they have to be able to communicate with the outside world in protocols all built on octets. No way to reconcile.

Additionally, now that I think about portable code can't really _use_ the 9th bit anyway thanks to unsigned char wrap.
