My husband's employer is changing insurances and I've discovered that basically no independent mental health people accept the new one
Can he perhaps negotiate for additional pay in place of insurance benefits and use it to purchase a plan that's actually useful?

doesn't buying a plan completely independently cost a lot more than buying it as part of a large employee negotiated group contract? :/
-
Maybe. But if they value his work & understand that the new insurance is a significant loss in compensation, may be willing to pay the diff.
-
Even if not, if they just compensate same as their cost, might be able to buy a better policy for "only" a couple hundred a month...
-
..which is pretty bleh, but probably not nearly as bad as paying doctor's bills out of pocket.

also I'm not sure how preexisting conditions are going at this exact moment but I *definitely* have them
-
Under the law you can't be denied coverage for preexisting conditions or discriminated against on any basis except age & smoking.
-
You can apply for ACA conforming individual plans via the marketplace even if you are eligible for coverage by employer or spouse's employer
-
The only catch is that you're not eligible for government premium subsidies in that case. That's why I'd ask employer to compensate.
