Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

    Thread: How to trash your code quality with awful hacks to make up for LLVM being so much worse than GCC.https://twitter.com/chandlerc1024/status/918034746587803648 …

    Switching GCC -> LLVM and seeing perf problems? @modocache asked for 10. Let's build a thread and see: 1) -fexperimental-new-pass-manager

        Some of the workarounds suggested are legit, but "move part of function to a header" is sooooo beyond acceptable.https://twitter.com/chandlerc1024/status/918036565649002496 …

        4 cont'd) Best option is to add inlinable version to header w/ early exit, leave rest outlined. inlining >> shrink wrapping, so yay!

        I would consider a number (not all) of @chandlerc1024's suggestions improvements to code quality. Move rarely-used paths out-of-line? Great!

        Unless already tightly coupled, putting code in headers is usually a big offense. Factoring based on perf rather than logic even moreso.

        Making silly transformations the compiler should be able to make can also be uglifying/obscuring:https://twitter.com/chandlerc1024/status/918037668436500480 …

        5) Make hot code not inlined smaller. Big win: if (...) f(a, b); else f(c, d); -> if (...) x = a; y = b; else x = c; y = d; f(x, y);

        "Let's go back to the 90s and start making random ugly source perturbations to help the optimizer" is not what LLVM should be bringing us.
