There's so many bad takes about git submodules out there that some coworkers created their worse own half-assed version of it >_>
submodules are one of the best multi-repo management systems but everyone blames them for all the inherent issues with multiple repos
The key everybody misses is that w/submods you have to follow clean interface boundary & versioning like for actual independent projects.
Otherwise history crosses repo boundaries in ways it's impossible to read, review, bisect, etc.
As such, splitting as submodules is a nontrivial maintenance cost & shouldn't be done unless there's value to the requisite boundaries.
So don't use submodules if you're the only consumer of the embedded repo?
Well don't use submodules unless the *idea* of other possible consumers makes sense and you're willing to pay the cost of facilitating them.
Because even if you don't need them now, failure to facilitate (good bds) breaks internal cross-submodule development processes.
