probably because only auto vendors are willing to sponsor. but some projects try to do generic solution (or even most of prototypes)

Yes. Because they want to bundle the final product, charge way more than sum of parts, and control it all.

I'm not particularly demanding that it be open/FOSS, just critical of the "if you don't like your driver buy a different car" aspect.

One of the reasons is because generally there's a requirement for safety certification of the entire hw+sw stack as an integrated whole

Also it's probably too early to standardize one sensor package as would be required for interchangability

Humans get by with basically just 2 eyes, 2 ears, and accelerometer as the sensor package. Bots should be able to do so too. :-)
