Why is "self-driving cars" (vs driver module that drives any car) even a thing?
I'm not particularly demanding that it be open/FOSS, just critical of the "if you don't like your driver buy a different car" aspect.

Not to mention what happens when support for an old model is dropped and the fix is "buy a new car".

One of the reasons is because generally there's a requirement for safety certification of the entire hw+sw stack as an integrated whole

Also it's probably too early to standardize one sensor package as would be required for interchangability

Humans get by with basically just 2 eyes, 2 ears, and accelerometer as the sensor package. Bots should be able to do so too. :-)
