Why is "self-driving cars" (vs driver module that drives any car) even a thing?

And why do actual CV/AI driving when you could just use MT drivers?

probably because only auto vendors are willing to sponsor. but some projects try to do generic solution (or even most of prototypes)

Yes. Because they want to bundle the final product, charge way more than sum of parts, and control it all.

an open or FOSS solution would need someone privileged enough to have skills and willing to donate their time

I'm not particularly demanding that it be open/FOSS, just critical of the "if you don't like your driver buy a different car" aspect.

Not to mention what happens when support for an old model is dropped and the fix is "buy a new car".

One of the reasons is because generally there's a requirement for safety certification of the entire hw+sw stack as an integrated whole

Also it's probably too early to standardize one sensor package as would be required for interchangability

Humans get by with basically just 2 eyes, 2 ears, and accelerometer as the sensor package. Bots should be able to do so too. :-)
