libtool's evil has no bounds. libltdl (libtool dynamic loader) parses .la files at runtime, breaking systems that rm *.la to fix that crap.

Update: it's supposed to fallback to .so if .la is missing, but under certain build configurations that code seems to break.

The same thing libtool does but for runtime - puts a broken abstraction layer around the existing clean interfaces (dlopen, $CC -shared).
